Current Research on Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD) at Sheffield Teaching Hospitals:
STH18013: The PRACTICE Trial: Pulmonary rehabilitation early after an exacerbation of Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (funder NIHR HTA Programme; Chief Investigator: Dr Rodney Hughes). When someone leaves hospital after a COPD flare up, they are currently offered an exercise programme to help their recovery, known as pulmonary rehabilitation. The research team will undertake a two year feasibility study to assess whether it is beneficial to begin pulmonary rehabilitation much earlier than it is currently used, using different types of exercise supervised by a physiotherapist. For further details, please visit the PRACTICE weblink: http://www.sheffield.ac.uk/scharr/sections/dts/ctru/practice
STH18208: The PHYSACTO trial: An exploratory, 12 week, randomised, partially double-blinded, placebo-controlled, parallel group trial to explore the effects of once daily bronchodilator treatment, supervised exercise training and behavioural modification on exercise capacity and physical activity in patients with COPD (Funder: Boehringer Ingelheim; Principal Investigator: Dr Omar Pirzada). This study will investigate new methods of exercise treatment in combination with a new type of drug therapy for COPD.
