Centre for Workplace Health

The CWH is a national centre of excellence for based on a collaboration between Sheffield Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust, the University of Sheffield and the national Health and Safety Laboratory. The Centre focusses on Occupational Health delivery and hosts the largest group of occupational health specialists in the UK delivering high quality research, training and advice.

Current specialist diagnostic facilities available within CWH include:

  • Computer software analysis of serial PEF data (OASYS 2)
  • Non-specific bronchial responsiveness (methacholine challenge)
  • Cough reflex sensitivity assessment (citric acid)
  • Exhaled nitric oxide measures
  • Induced sputum
  • Workplace challenge and workplace visit where appropriate
  • Specific allergen challenge (one of approximately six sites nationally with this facility)
  • State of the art immunological testing to a wide variety of workplace agents with a specific expertise of measuring IgE to workplace agents
  • Biological monitoring, toxicology, immunology and microbiological input via HSL
  • Access to imaging facilities on site, and close working with the MDT clinic for lung cancer assessment
